
Loretta Heuer

Dr. Heuer is an experienced nurse educator, grant writer, program developer/evaluator, and researcher who has worked with underserved populations, specifically American Indians, for the past 15 years. She has collaborated with the Spirit Lake Nation as PI of the Sustaining Career Pathways for American Indian Health Professionals in ND. This grant had multiple outcomes through collaboration with Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and the Columbia University Medical School. They taught community health courses and developed workforce and health activities for American Indian youth and adults.
Additional grant activities were the development of five Recruitment and Retention into Nursing videos, a documentary on American Indian Nursing (11 film festival awards, three semi-finalists, 11 selections, one professional organization film festival), two e-university courses to educate middle school and high school students on the American Indian culture and nursing, multiple clips that promoted nursing on Good Health TV, plus reports, publications, and presentations. Dr. Heuer researches and evaluates projects identified by Spirit Lake businesses or educational systems. Currently, she is collaborating with Spirit Lake Senior Services and evaluating two funded grants: the Spirit Lake Tribe Abuse in Later Life and Dementia Care in Indian Country.
